When Should You Renew Your California CCW, Exactly?

The short answer is: before your current license expires—and early enough to complete every requirement imposed by your issuing authority without rushing.
The more useful answer requires a little planning. California does not have one sheriff or police department processing every concealed-carry license. The California Department of Justice establishes statewide requirements, but the sheriff or police department that issued the license remains the licensing authority. Its application portal, procedures, fees, document requests and processing timeline control the local renewal process.
For Sacramento County permit holders, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office standard CCW permits renew every two years. Recently passed & signed into law by Governer Gavin Newsom is Assembly Bill 1948 (AB1948). AB 1947 has extended CCW Renewals from two years to three. AB1947 goes into effect on January, 01, 2027. Before renewal, the licensee must complete an eight-hour legal, mental health and firearms update refresher course, take a written test and qualify with every firearm the person wants listed on the renewed permit. The safest strategy is not to wait for a reminder. Create your own renewal timeline.
Start with the expiration date printed on your license
A standard California CCW license is valid for a period of two years and up to three years starting January 01, 2027. Other specialized license types can have different validity periods, so the date printed on the license—not memory—is the controlling date for the individual permit holder.
Place at least two reminders on your calendar well before expiration. As a personal planning practice, consider an early reminder several months ahead and another closer to the date when your issuing authority allows renewal submissions.
That is a planning recommendation, not a universal California filing window. Licensing authorities may establish different procedures for when their online systems accept renewal applications. Check your issuing authority’s current instructions before submitting.
Do not assume that starting an application automatically extends an existing license. Sacramento County Sheriff allows permit holders to submit renewals as early as 45 days before the expiration date listed on the permit and up to 90 days after the expiration. Confirm the status of your license directly with the issuing authority, and do not carry under an expired license. If you do so you are breaking the law and could face permit revocation.
Confirm that you are using the correct issuing authority
Renew through the agency responsible for your license. California DOJ does not issue CCW licenses; county sheriffs and participating municipal police departments serve as licensing authorities.
Sacramento County applicants use the Sheriff’s online permit system for new, renewal and modification applications. If you moved, changed your principal place of business, or received your license through another agency, review the applicable rules before assuming the process remains the same. Sac County Sheriff requires permit holders to notify them within 10 days of moving whether it's temporary or not.
Your licensing authority’s website should be the first place you check for:
The permitted renewal-submission window
Current fees
Required identification and residency documents
Training-certificate requirements
Accepted instructors
Firearm-listing limitations
Application and appointment procedures
Agency-specific forms
Screenshots, social-media posts and advice from another county may be outdated or inapplicable.
Schedule the required renewal training
California’s standard renewal training course must be at least eight hours long and cover required subjects. Current state materials identify topics including firearm safety and handling, shooting technique, safe storage, transportation and vehicle security, laws governing where permit holders may carry, permissible firearm use, and lawful lethal force in self-defense. Training also includes a written examination, mental-health instruction and live-fire exercises.
Sacramento County describes its renewal course as an eight-hour legal and firearms update refresher. Assembly Bill 1078 (AB 1078) starting September 01, 2026, requires every CCW Permit holder who is submitting a renewal application to get fingerprinted every time CCW Permit comes up for renewal.
The course is not merely paperwork. Laws, prohibited locations, agency procedures and safe-carry practices can change during a two-year license period. Renewal education is an opportunity to identify gaps before they become serious mistakes. Confirm that your instructor is currently authorized. Sacramento County requires its CCW training and qualifications to be completed by a California DOJ-certified CCW Program instructor.
FSC instructor certification by itself is not the same as DOJ CCW Program instructor certification.
Before enrolling, ask:
Is the instructor currently DOJ-certified for the CCW Program?
Is the course accepted by my issuing authority?
Does the class satisfy the full renewal requirement?
What equipment and ammunition must I provide?
What documents will I receive after successful completion?
Will I qualify with every firearm I want on my renewed permit?
Review every firearm you want listed
Sacramento County requires renewal applicants to qualify with every firearm they want listed on the permit. Permit holders are allowed a maximum of three listed firearms and identifies certain prohibited rifle calibers and rifle-caliber pistols.
Before class, compare each firearm with your existing license and ownership records. Confirm the make, model, caliber and serial number. California DOJ states that applicants must be the recorded owner of each firearm listed on a license.
Decide whether you truly intend to continue carrying and maintaining proficiency with every listed firearm. If you want to add, remove or replace one, follow the issuing authority’s current procedure. Do not assume that a modification and a renewal are processed in the same way.
Arrive at training with a safe, functional and lawfully transported firearm, appropriate ammunition, required protective equipment and any documents specified by the instructor. Follow the instructor’s and range’s rules regarding when firearms may be handled or removed from their cases.
Review your information before submitting
Renewal is not simply a request to print a new expiration date. Current state procedures require the licensing authority and California DOJ to confirm continued eligibility.
Review the application carefully and answer every question truthfully. Update information involving:
Legal name
Residence and mailing address
Employment information when requested
Contact information
Prior license details
Firearm information
Arrests, charges, convictions or court orders
Any other matter specifically requested by the application
Do not guess when the application asks for exact information. Locate the applicable record or contact the licensing authority for clarification. Inaccurate or incomplete information can delay the process and may create more serious consequences.
Applicants who participate in California’s Safe at Home address-confidentiality program should review the current state application instructions concerning the use of a designated address.
Build a renewal file
Keep a secure folder—digital, physical or both—containing the materials relevant to your renewal. Depending on the issuing authority, that may include:
A copy of the current license
Government-issued identification
Residency documentation
Training and qualification certificate
Firearm make, model, caliber and serial numbers
Application confirmation
Receipts
Agency messages and appointment information
Protect documents containing addresses, identification numbers and firearm serial numbers. Do not post them publicly or transmit them through unapproved channels.
Common mistakes that create avoidable stress
Waiting until the final days
Training availability, range scheduling, documentation errors and agency processing can all take time. A last-minute start removes your ability to correct problems calmly.
Taking training from the wrong provider
A respected firearms instructor is not automatically a California DOJ-certified CCW Program instructor. Verify the instructor’s current status and acceptance by the issuing authority.
Qualifying with the wrong firearm
The firearm used in class must match what you intend to list. Verify identifying information before qualification and application submission.
Relying on old legal information
Carry restrictions and licensing procedures change. Use the current course, current agency website and current application—not a checklist saved from a previous renewal.
Treating qualification as the only preparation
Passing a course of fire demonstrates a required level of performance in that setting. Responsible carry also requires continuing attention to safe handling, storage, judgment, conflict avoidance and lawful decision-making.
Renewal is a responsibility checkpoint
A CCW license is not simply a card in a wallet. Renewal asks whether the licensee has remained informed, practiced and prepared to accept the responsibility of carrying a firearm in public.
Use the process to examine more than marksmanship:
Has your equipment remained safe and reliable?
Can you access and secure it responsibly?
Have your physical abilities or medical needs changed?
Do you understand current carry restrictions?
Are your avoidance and de-escalation skills receiving as much attention as your shooting skills?
Are you practicing often enough to recognize your limitations?
The purpose is not merely to remain licensed. The purpose is to remain responsible.
Your Sacramento County renewal checklist
Before submitting, confirm that you have:
Checked the exact expiration date on your current license
Reviewed the current Sacramento County Sheriff’s instructions and online portal
Confirmed when the portal permits you to submit
Selected a DOJ-certified CCW Program instructor accepted by Sacramento County
Completed the required eight-hour renewal course
Passed the required written and live-fire components
Qualified with every firearm you want listed
Confirmed the accuracy of all firearm information
Gathered the documents requested by the issuing authority
Reviewed every application response for accuracy
Saved your confirmations, certificates and agency communications securely
